Observations on Things & Stuff...
Writing about whatever comes to mind really – culture, books, films, politics, recovery and stuff...
I’m a British writer based in Bristol – a city you’re unlikely to be familiar with if you don’t know the UK well.
Think Banksy, Portishead, Massive Attack, trip-hop and cider…
My writing covers pretty much anything that catches my attention and often has something of a philosophical perspective (I’m conscious that sounds pretentious but I’m not talking Hegel here).
But it’s what I studied at university and it informs both the way I think and – to some extent – my writing style.
I guess you can be judge of that though.
Subjects I’ve written about recently include: our relationship with technology and how that’s changing us as individuals – especially with the rapid developments taking place around AI at the moment; mental health & addiction; underreported historical narratives that I think deserve a little more attention; politics; philosophy; and cultural commentary.
I’m a big reader – both of fiction and nonfiction – and some of the writers I most admire are Truman Capote, James Baldwin, David Foster Wallace, Christopher Hitchens, Joan Didion, Leslie Jamison, Jia Tolentino, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Brandon Taylor, Bryan Washington and Garth Greenwell.
That’s by no means an exhaustive list – though I appreciate it may have been exhausting to read – apologies for the self-indulgence there…
